Our mechanics at Executive Automotive know how much you care about your Porsche, which is why we are Porsche repair and service specialists. Looking at the Porsche 911 models, the words โsports carโ, and โracingโ will quickly come to mind. These cars have been wildly popular since their introduction in 1964, and the current line up has 16 different styles to choose from.
The 911 Carrera/S and Carrera 4/4S
Unlike their predecessors, these Carrera models have turbochargers on their flat-six engines. This allows for improved performance and emissions compliance. The standard Carerra has 370 horsepower, with 0-60 in 4 seconds, while the S models have 420 horsepower, with 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. The transmission choices are the PDK dual-clutch automatic or the 7-speed manual.
The 911 Targa 4/4S
At first glance, the Targaโs main difference is its convertible top. This Porsche favorite offers electric motors that lift the back window, retract the glass roof into the hatch, then replace the window all with the push of a button. The Targa 4 and 4S also have turbochargers on their flat-six engines, with 370 and 420 horsepower respectively, but the Targa is only available with all-wheel drive.
The 911 GT3 RS
Unlike other Porsche 911 models, the GT3 RS remains non-turbo charged. This street racer offers a 4.0 with 500 horsepower. Only available with the PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, the GT3 can reach 60 mph in 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 193 mph. This model is popular for track racers because of its wider body, rear-wheel steering, and Porscheโs Torque Vectoring Plus system. Because of its penchant for racing, it comes standard with 6 point harnesses, fire extinguisher, and roll cage.
The 911 R
The 911 R delivers the same 500 horsepower as the GT3 but with one major difference: the 6-speed manual transmission. The plastic windows are lighter weight โ 110 pounds lighter than the GT3, with a top speed of 200 miles per hour, as opposed to 193. The rear axle modifications make for a little better handling for those ready to race, but Porsche only plans to make 991 of the R models.
The 911 Turbo and Turbo S
Originally created for international racing, the 911 Turbo has since become one of Porscheโs most recognized offerings. Both the Turbo and Turbo S have twin-turbo, flat-six, 3.8-liter engines but with 540 horsepower and 580 horsepower respectively. Both come with the PDK dual-clutch transmissions and hit 0-60 at 2.9 and 2.8 seconds. They differ in top speeds though: 198 for the Turbo and 205 for the Turbo S.
The Porsche 911 series is definitely for the serious racer, but they are also popular with just about anyone who can afford to drive one. Movie stars, collectors, lawyers, and producers are popular owners. While the true horsepower and speed of the 911 series may never be realized off the track, their position as a status symbol is recognized on and off the track.
