Would you buy a Land Rover, specifically a Range Rover Velar 2019?

The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is an impressive vehicle on the exterior. It adds an upscale interior and roomy cargo area to round things out. However, the Velar has a few downsides. Everything inside the interior is a touchscreen, which takes some acclimation. The powertrains aren’t exactly impressive, and the top models are expensive. Let’s take a closer look:

Compact Luxury Crossover

It’s a car category without a lot of competition. The Velar goes up against the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class, the Audi Q5, and the Porsche Macan. Among those, the Velar probably offers the most style with its classic Range Rover looks and a tapering roof. The standard powertrain is a turbocharged four-cylinder with AWD. Optional engines include a diesel four-cylinder and a supercharged V6.

New For 2019

The Velar now offers a 21.6-gallon fuel tank, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for its main new tweaks. Premium upholstery is available as an individual option, and there is now a Driver Assistance package that offers a number of automated safety systems.

The Velar ranges in price from $50,595 to $64,295 across a total of four trims. For most people, the turbo four running on standard gasoline is the best choice. The V6 offers almost too much power for a vehicle that emphasizes style and luxury over performance. The P250 R-Dynamic SE trim gets you a strong cadre of features, including leather seats, 20-inch wheels, and a 17-speaker audio system.

Engine Choices In-Depth

One of the problems with the Velar is that the engine choices leave something to be desired in nearly every category. The base four-cylinder feels like the right choice with 247 horsepower but, at the same time, it feels underpowered and makes the Velar feel heavy. The diesel moves the Velar better but is distractingly loud. The V6 has plenty of power, but it also consumes a lot of gas and is pretty noisy in its own right. The handling also feels very much like an SUV. The ride is firm and balanced, but definitely not sporty. Gas mileage is 22 mpg on the highway for the V6 and 26 mpg highway for the turbo four.

This is one place where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar 2019 shines. The interior is modern and stylish with a dual-screen infotainment system. The Velar features high-quality materials throughout and very meticulous detailing. The cargo room is nothing to laugh at either. The area behind the rear seats can accommodate ten carry-on size bags. If you fold the rear seats down, then you can get in over 20 bags.

Warranty and Maintenance

The Velar offers a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty, which is average but not great. It does not offer a scheduled maintenance plan with that warranty. You can only buy that through a Land Rover dealer add-on. Check out the common repairs land rovers face.

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar 2019 offers a luxury nameplate and a capable SUV, but it is likely best-matched with someone who specifically prefers the Land Rover brand.
